A Japanese company has developed technology to transmit a two-hour movie in 0.5 seconds, the world's fastest speed achieved with fibre-optic cables in the field, it says.

Kansai Electric used fibre-optic cables on power-transmitting steel towers to achieve the speed of one terabit per second, which is more than 100 times faster than inter-city data transmissions currently in use, a spokesman says.

The company, Japan's second-largest power supplier, has not decided when to put the technology into practical use but says it is possible that it would come in 2010 or later.

Optware, the developer of the HVD and HVC (Holographic Versatile Disc, Card) formats, has announced they’re launching a division in America.

Both mediums use Optware’s patented “collinear technology” to store data using holograms, which in the case of HVD, allows for a 1TB capacity on a disc the size of a standard DVD. Optware says the theoretical maximum capacity of the discs is 3.9TB, and the transfer rate sits at about 1Gbps.

They’re the real deal; sitting on the “HVD Alliance” with Optware are much bigger names such as FujiFilm, Toshiba, Alps, and Verbatim (a.k.a. Mitsubishi Kagaku Media). The company is currently looking for venture capitalists and partners, so: buy low, sell high.

As many as six times more customers are returning the Rokr phones ( Motorola's iTunes Phone ) than is normal for new handsets, according to American Technology Research analyst Albert Lin, who said he talked to distributors, retailers and call center workers at Cingular Wireless LLC, which sells the phone.

Motorola Chief Executive Officer Ed Zander said he is disappointed with the phone's marketing and plans to fix it.

``We got off to a little bit of a rough start,'' Zander said in an interview after Motorola reported on Oct. 18 that third- quarter profit tripled, driven by more-popular phones such as the Razr. ``People were looking for an iPod and that's not what it is. We may have missed the marketing message there.''

Zander said the Schaumburg, Illinois-based company didn't make it clear enough that the Rokr stores fewer songs than an iPod. The phone holds 100 songs and costs $249.99 with a two-year contract from Cingular. The iPod Nano, introduced the same day, holds 1,000 songs and costs about the same.

YOUNG film producer Myo Thandar Tun and director Chan Thar Kyi Soe have been selected to attend the Bangkok World Film Festival from October 14 to 24.

The pair will present their film proposal at the festival as part of the Young Producer Award, which is sponsored by the Nantes Festival des 3 Continents and has been opened to South East Asian directors and producers for the first time this year.

Six Myanmar director-producer teams submitted their proposals to the selection committee, but only Myo Thandar Tun received the news that her proposal was successful.

The screenplay submitted by the pair, Ta Cho Ah Sin Hla Ta Cho Ah Sin Ma Hla (Some People Are Good Looking But Some Are Bad Looking), tells the tale of women living in a shelter, examines how they got there and their struggle to go on. It was penned by Myanmar literary award winner Nu Nu Yee.

“We got just one week for all the preparations and I did not have much hope that we would win, actually,” the young producer, who also owns her own film company, said.

“This story has been on my mind for a long time and it is one of my favourites.
“I could not believe it once I heard the good news. I really did not hope to win... Now, I feel that we have to try our hardest to represent the culture and lifestyle of Myanmar with this film.

“It is great that Myanmar films are getting the chance to be seen on the international market,” she added.

Myo Thandar Tun has already produced two films, one, depicting the Bagan era, received screenings at several international film festivals. The other, Hna Khan Htet Ka Dar Twa (The Sharp Knife on the Lip), won her a Myanmar academy award.

Eight producer-director teams from South East Asia will meet in Bangkok to attend the workshop as part of the third Bangkok World Film Festival. There, they will have the opportunity to discuss their projects with European filmmakers and receive advice on everything from script development to budgets.

One entrant will be chosen to attend the Festival des 3 Continents in Nantes on November 22 with winners from other workshops. The overall winner in Nantes will have their project financed.

More than 10 years ago, Michael Davidson went looking to capture the beauty of microchip circuitry in photographs. In among the transistors and wire traces, he found something unexpected: Waldo.

"When I first saw him, he was upside-down, and I didn't recognize his face," the Florida-based cell biology researcher said.

Davidson suspected at first that the tiny design he saw was circular patterns added to the chip to thwart attempts by reverse-engineers to deduce its inner workings. But a second inspection showed it to be the characteristically hard-to-find character from the children's book series. "I realized, 'This is a doodle of some kind.' Then I started looking over the whole chip. I discovered Daffy Duck and other things on that chip," Davidson said.

If you want to see how hardware guys is interesting in art and want to find out what pic might be hiding in your chip, check it out here.

Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates visited UW-Madison today (Wednesday, Oct. 12) as part of his 2005 College Tour, designed to promote greater youth involvement in technology careers.

Gates' busy afternoon included making a surprise visit as a "guest lecturer" for a computer science class, which was filmed by mtvU, a 24-hour college network. Not surprising, however, was his overall message - the exciting opportunities for today's students as they enter fields related to technology.

Later in the afternoon, Gates was scheduled to discuss "The Impact and Opportunity of Technology: Why Computer Science? Why Now?" at a student forum. A video stream of his talk will be available Friday, Oct. 14.

UW-Madison is one of five universities selected for Gates' tour.

Mailnation is the first company to offer a 1TB email account. The service is ad free, offers WAP access and comes with free support (telephone and ticket-based). Does this sound too good to be true? It probably is. Bizarrely, once you have signed up you must go a refinancing and fill in duff information that they provide otherwise your account will be deleted. Why you have to do this is beyond me. Also, you are not allowed to use your account to receive any emails from Yahoo Groups.Again, why you can't do this is beyond me.

That aside, the service doesn't look too bad. You can choose from multiple different domains for your email address and the interface can be made to look like amongst others OSX, Outlook and Eudora.

After four years of negotiations, two elephants left here for Germany last week in return for a breeding pair of rhinoceroses and a male and two female lions, the weekly Myanmar Times reported Monday.

The two female elephants, Shu Thuzar and Aye Chan May, left on a chartered flight to Cologne on Tuesday under an exchange program between Yangon Zoo and Cologne Zoological Gardens, the paper said. The rhinoceroses and lions are scheduled to arrive from Germany within five months.

The Cologne zoo proposed the exchange because it wanted to increase its Asian elephant population with elephants from outside Europe and to counter the declining population of Asian elephants in the wild, the zoo's deputy director, Olaf Behlert, told the paper.

"If we do not breed them in zoos now, the Asian elephant will become extinct," Behlert was quoted as saying by the paper.

The Cologne zoo has enough male elephants for the two females from Myanmar for the European breeding program, according to Behlert.

The keepers of the two elephants accompanied them to Germany to help ensure a smooth transition for the animals as they adjust to their new home, the paper added.

The assistant director of Yangon Zoo, Saw Win, welcomed the program, saying it provided an opportunity for the zoo to acquire rare animals, the report said.

According to Saw Win, the zoo's only white rhinoceros is at an advanced age and it has only three lions of various ages.
