YOUNG film producer Myo Thandar Tun and director Chan Thar Kyi Soe have been selected to attend the Bangkok World Film Festival from October 14 to 24.
The pair will present their film proposal at the festival as part of the Young Producer Award, which is sponsored by the Nantes Festival des 3 Continents and has been opened to South East Asian directors and producers for the first time this year.
Six Myanmar director-producer teams submitted their proposals to the selection committee, but only Myo Thandar Tun received the news that her proposal was successful.
The screenplay submitted by the pair, Ta Cho Ah Sin Hla Ta Cho Ah Sin Ma Hla (Some People Are Good Looking But Some Are Bad Looking), tells the tale of women living in a shelter, examines how they got there and their struggle to go on. It was penned by Myanmar literary award winner Nu Nu Yee.
“We got just one week for all the preparations and I did not have much hope that we would win, actually,” the young producer, who also owns her own film company, said.
“This story has been on my mind for a long time and it is one of my favourites.
“I could not believe it once I heard the good news. I really did not hope to win... Now, I feel that we have to try our hardest to represent the culture and lifestyle of Myanmar with this film.
“It is great that Myanmar films are getting the chance to be seen on the international market,” she added.
Myo Thandar Tun has already produced two films, one, depicting the Bagan era, received screenings at several international film festivals. The other, Hna Khan Htet Ka Dar Twa (The Sharp Knife on the Lip), won her a Myanmar academy award.
Eight producer-director teams from South East Asia will meet in Bangkok to attend the workshop as part of the third Bangkok World Film Festival. There, they will have the opportunity to discuss their projects with European filmmakers and receive advice on everything from script development to budgets.
One entrant will be chosen to attend the Festival des 3 Continents in Nantes on November 22 with winners from other workshops. The overall winner in Nantes will have their project financed.
