First IM worm that could chat!

A new worm,named IM.Myspace04.AIM, that targets users of America Online's AOL Instant Messenger is believed to be the first that actually chats with the intended victim.

It says something like "lol thats cool" and included a URL to a malicious file "clarissa17.pif." If users feel suspected and asked if the attachment contained a virus, the worm has replied: "lol no its not its a virus". Cool, huh?

The malicious file disables security software, installs a backdoor and tweaks system files. Then it starts sending itself to contacts on the victim's buddy list.

But the worm is programmed so that the infected user cannot see the messages that are being sent out by the worm.

These news are based on the IM security vendor IMlogic. "This is a first," said Andrew Burton, director of product management at Waltham, Mass.-based IMlogic. This worm is not widespread, but attackers are just trying out this new technique, he said. "We will see one or two instances of an attack, there will be a refinement and then there will be an outbreak."

Seriously, it's so stupid to get an AIM virus.. i mean c'mon, look at the links they send you, most of them end in .COM (a file, not a .com website), .EXE, or .PIF.. Use you're brains, most pictures out there are .JPG or .GIF.. Ive never had an AIM virus and never will, people need to learn to stop randomly clicking links because they think its something cool

Theres been similar ones before on msn i think it was, it tries to chat to you and includes a URL. Just dont click any URL that looks dodgy.

i remember that, it kinda put me off reading comments on news articles. so much flaming - it's too bad people have a false sense of security behind an anonymous name and feel they can just lay into people with immature insults. i mean they wouldnt do it face to face, and if they did, well - whats this world coming too?

i got sent an im just like this from somebody on my buddies list saying "hey, this looks just like you!" then a link to a .pif. file on some random ip. Obviously, i didn't download it...but its weird...the im was sent from somebody on my buddies list that I have known for like 3 years

Perhaps people should read a bit closer, and not assume the details.

No where above does is say anything about .com , .exe etc, it lists a valid media file extension.

As per above, it's obviously "intelligent" enough to reply back to an IM sent questioning the potential of a virus, more than likely appearing as a response from a valid IM user.

It appears to send itself out using a KNOWN and VALID IM identity, not some "unknown person", so why wouldn't people acknowledge the sender as legit?.

People who write virus's should be taken out to a freaking public place, and castrated for all to watch. They do nothing but waste people's time and energy, and make software companies money hand over fist.
